What a weird season - do the stats lie?

Post by Rolfy on Mon Jul 21, 2008 10:15 pm

Firstly, please nobody take offence to this.

Look at the stats, either they lie or its been a topsy turvy season:

Firstly, batting averages.
Who would have expected KJ to be above batsmen like Tony, Ross, Micky, Buck, AJ etc.
Only one regular with an average over 25, yet the talent is there for all to see.

Bowling averages;
The only regular with a strike rate under 20 is Matty, with the leading wicket taker (JC) having a strike rate of over 30 (thus averaging one wicket every 5 overs)
The only regular bowler with an economy rate under 4 per over is PP.
No 5 wicket hauls for anyone this year.

Ducks:
Amazing high figure of ducks this season, with 18 being recorded so far, with 13 of those coming from people who I would class as "more than capable" batsmen.

its a funny old game!

... would put some of that down to teams turning up with 1st teamers etc. - that said we should see the benefit of playing against better players in the upcoming games/next season, so i wouldnt say the stats neccasaril;y lie but i would say they dont quite paint an accurate picture of the way things have gone either. Wink and we will only get better (hopefully!)

They do lie sometimes, For example your going to have a better avaerage if you bat down the order as less chance of gettin out but that does have a di advantage aswell when you got less time to get runs,

Stats do lie as personally i think PP has been the best bowler this year but his average is 30, with only 7 wickets or summat, you can bowl to well!! it doesnt tell the whole story.

Bucky usually gets the middle order/tail out with PP battling agaist the openers if buck opened and PP had the middle order/tail to bowl out PP will probably have more wickets, but Probably go for more runs as they will just swing there bat,

So at times it doesnt tell the whole truth although it does say that KJ was star man on sunday!
