Mobs vs Cavs - 29/6/08 - The Mobs report

Post by Rolfy on Tue Jul 01, 2008 8:58 pm

The Mobs skipper called tails as according to Mr.Walsh tails never fails, well cheers Pidge, I lost the toss (again!)
Tony put his troops into bat, which I was happy about as I would have put them in anyway.
The Old Boys missing messrs Sutherland, Dorrington, Loak, Swann, Kirby, Knight, Cunningham, and Peleszok to name but a few pulled in a couple of new players to make the team up by giving debuts to Ash Haynes, Roger Paterson and Dean Maples. Upon taking the field, it became clear that Ryan Whitehead wasnt around, and had in fact let his team mates down, and is unlikely ever to wear the Mobs shirt again (as I still havent had a call to apologise - thats a hint Ryan if youre reading this!!!!!).
Undeterred, the new ball was chucked to Yorkie and Deano, who both bowled well early doors, and both took a wicket, Yorkie getting the "out of form" Dave Rogers caught behind with a bouncer, and Deano having Gayward caught playing one of his back foot drives through point, with the returning veteran Dave Goodjohn holding a fine catch. The Cavs battled back, with captain Tony Harris and all-rounder Phil Peel batting patiently. With Whitehead not present, the Mobs were a little short on bowling options, however, cometh the hour cometh the man. Mr Mark Thomas was thrown the ball, and what did he do with it?? Well, actually, he chucked it so far up in the air the batsman got dazzled by the sunshine, and the ball hit the Russian space station, on its return to the earths atmosphere it did seem to pitch and turn occasionally!!! One "special" delivery tempted Peel into a big hit and he edged it to probably where 2nd slip would be, and Ash flung himself acrobatically to take an amazing catch. (Note to Loaky and Dozza - wicket keepers can take catches). This brought to the crease the Cavs keeper, I cant remember his name, all I can remember is that he kept edging the ball all over the place. Eventually his luck ran out, and Tommo claimed his second wicket. Just remember folks, this is the same Tommo who REFUSED to bowl the previous Wednesday. This brought Ross to the wicket. Amid the huddle while he came to the wicket, the Skipper said "With these two batting there is a chance of a run-out", and with the partnership two balls old, there were two very dodgy calls, and with a bit of luck could have been out twice!
Rolfy brought himself back on at the bottom end, and proceeded to bowl a couple of hmmm how do I put this, widish deliveries. But saved the big inswinger for the Cavs skipper to send him back for a fine knock of 56. At this point, I must apologise to poor Roger. The minute Tony walked to the crease, Roger fielded at long on, waiting for the "Tony slog shot" which the Cavs see every f**king week, well every f**king week except this one, so well done Big H for not falling into it (grrrrrrrrr).
Deano came back and cleaned up Marriotts stumps, and that brought together AJ and Micky spin. Both batted well to increase the tempo, with AJ learning a hard lesson. AJ - Dont charge down the track to a FAST bowler, otherwise you will get hurt!!!!! Luckily, it was only the gentle medium pace of me this week, so no broken bones!

Tea was taken, and what a fab tea it was. Official thanks go to Mrs Hayward (for the tea that is, not for giving birth to your children!), and Mrs Bahookie (I suppose thanks to KJ too for being an old f**ker).

Veteran Dave Goodjohn and Derek Paterson opened the Mobs reply, and got about thier work well, seeing off the gentle medium pace of Gayward, and the girly twirlies of Rogered. At this point, the Mobs were in control and firmly on top. Matty Hayward then came on and ripped the middle order out of the Mobs line up, bowling with more pace and control than his brother. Tommo survived a tight LBW shout first ball, and stuck in while partners came and went, notable ducks for Maples, Coe and Armstrong.
In the end, the Mobs campaign frittered out, with Tommo making 61 not out (some would say it was a fine knock, others needed waking up every few minutes due to boredom!). Another hightlight being the knock on Ellen (Daniels better half), who batted at no11, and confidentally knocked 3no, which is more than Dan has scored all season!

From a Mobs point of view, a fun day was had. A couple of beers consumed, a good game of friendly cricket with plenty of banter, played competitively, yet enjoyable.

Mobs Man of the Match: Mark Thomas
Mobs Chump of the Match: Ryan Whitehead (in fact no he doesnt deserve the publicity)
